ABOUT GOOSSEN TUTOR PROMOTIONS

Shortly after the new millennium, Dan Goossen formed a partnership with construction magnate Ronald Tutor, president and CEO of Tutor-Saliba Corp.

Goossen Tutor Promotions operates out of Sherman Oaks, California , where Dan and his seven brothers and two sisters were raised. "I grew up with Dan and the Goossens," said Tutor, who also was involved in the old Ten Goose Boxing company started by Dan back in 1982. "We're very close friends."

With the addition of Ron Tutor's name to the company letterhead, Goossen gained financial backing. "Dan will take his promoting skills - which are second to none - and handle the day-to-day boxing business. He'll be on the front lines and I'll be in the background" said Tutor.

"Ron's success in business is unparalleled, and between the two of us, I feel the tradition and success we've enjoyed in boxing will continue to flourish for many years to come," said Goossen.

Since the formation of his promotional company, Goossen has promoted many successful boxing events, including an impressive amount of world championship bouts (the first staged within 6 months of opening his doors), including two Floyd Mayweather championship events; the July 2007 victory for Paul Williams when he took the WBO welterweight title from Antonio Margarito; Robert Guerrero's climb to becoming a two-time IBF Featherweight world champion; numerous world title and elimination bouts for James Toney; the rematch for Julio Gonzalez challenging Clinton Woods for the IBF Light Heavyweight Championship; leading the 2004 sole U.S. Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward to an unblemished record and the hot young heavyweight world contenders featuring Eddie Chambers, and Cristobal Arreola .

Other
past title fights for Goossen's fighters have included Robbie Peden vs. Marco Antonio Barrera; Lakva Sim against Miguel Callist; Derrick Harmon vs. Dariusz Michalczewski; Glen Johnson's victory over Clinton Woods and his multi-million dollar paydays against Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones in three separate bouts; Lovemore N’Dou vs.Sharmba Mitchell; Wayne McCullough challenging Oscar Larios twice; Guerrero winning his title from Eric Aiken and Sam Soliman against Winky Wright to name a few. Goossen Tutor has consistently built a tremendous reputation as the promotional company that provides its fighters world championship opportunities, television exposure and million dollar purses. Impressive results reached the old fashion way, hard work, ethical foundation and a uncanny sense of strategy.

Daniel A. Goossen
President
After more than a quarter-century as a professional boxing promoter, the determination and abilities of Dan Goossen to build an organization that is universally recognized as one of the preeminent companies in the world continues to achieve success with the same passion and enthusiasm that existed over 25 years ago.

Goossen is President of Goossen Tutor Promotions. The Sherman Oaks, California native was no stranger to the role of worldwide boxing promoter when he partnered up with childhood family friend and construction mogul Ron Tutor in August 2002.

In the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, Goossen operated Ten Goose Boxing. Named after Dan and his nine siblings (many of whom had roles in the company’s success), Ten Goose Boxing quickly became a mainstay in the Southern California boxing scene developing future stars.

Goossen, who discovered and managed the career of bouncer-turned-actor Mr. T in the late 1970’s, guided the careers of several young boxers who went on to become well-known and respected World Champions under the Ten Goose Boxing auspices. Most notable of these were Michael “Second To” Nunn, “Terrible” Terry Norris and the Ruelas brothers, Gabriel and Rafael.

Nunn, Goossen’s first world champion, dethroned then IBF Middleweight Champion Frank Tate when he knocked him out in the ninth round of their July, 1988 encounter at Caesars Palace. Goossen, ever the forward thinker, capitalized on Nunn’s worldwide popularity by negotiating an exclusive multi-fight, multi-million dollar deal for the new champion with casino magnate Steve Wynn to make Nunn the “exclusive fighter” of the new Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a business model later utilized by other high-profile promoters, including Don King.

In February 1994, Goossen had his next world champion when Rafael Ruelas beat Freddie Pendleton at the Great Western Forum for the IBF lightweight championship. Later that year, older brother Gabriel stopped Jesse James Leija, who was coming off his great victory over the great Azumah Nelson, in Las Vegas for the WBC junior-lightweight title.

Shortly after the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake destroyed Dan’s Van Nuys office, Bob Arum, of Top Rank, offered Dan a position as Executive Vice-President where he immediately handled the day-to-day promotional duties.

After two years with Top Rank, Goossen wanted to get back on his own and in the summer of 1996 he joined forces with a television executive to form America Presents with the financial backing of cable-magnate Bill Daniels. In his five-year stint at America Presents Goossen signed and promoted the likes of heavyweight David Tua, middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, super welterweight champion and sole 1996 Olympic Gold medallist David Reid and a young super lightweight named Hector Camacho, Jr. By the end of its second year of operation, Goossen signed the then biggest act in show business and entertainment - Mike Tyson - and, as usual, when no one suspected it.

What was not unexpected in boxing circles was that someday Goossen would once again move back to California. Shortly after Goossen was named “2001 Promoter of the Year” by the World Boxing Association, Goossen Tutor Promotions was born and continues its reputation of boxing prominence.

Under Goossen’s leadership, Goossen Tutor promotes over 20 boxers. This list includes current WBO welterweight world champion, Paul Williams; IBF featherweight world champion Robert Guerrero; WBO #1 world heavyweight contender Tony Thompson; undefeated, rising stars such as Mexican heavyweight sensation Cristobal Arreola and 2004 sole U.S. Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward; IBF #1 world ranked and heavyweight Eddie Chambers and world champion James Toney, and recently, the promoter for consensus “Best Pound For Pound” boxer in the World, “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather.

Goossen has negotiated numerous promotional deals to showcase their talents with the likes of cable television entities HBO, Showtime, Fox Sports Net, ESPN and Mark Cuban-owned HDNet and worldwide entertainment venues such as Mandalay Bay, Madison Square Garden, Staples Center, MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, Harrah’s and Home Depot Center. He also promotes two popular California non-televised boxing series in Lemoore at Tachi Palace Casino and San Jose’s HP Pavilion “Fight Night at the Tank.”

2006 included the Showtime heavyweight thriller, James Toney against Samuel Peter in “No Risk, No Reward” extravaganza Goossen promoted at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 2, 2006 and the November 4, 2006 “Pretty Risky” the HBO Pay-Per-View blockbuster at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The Goossen Tutor promoted event featured Mayweather challenging and beating WBC Welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir which immediately catapulted Mayweather into his record-breaking victory over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, 2007.

2007 saw Goossen sell out the Home Depot Center when he promoted ‘Pride N’ Punishment’ the blockbuster Antonio Margarito vs. Paul Williams world championship slugfest televised on HBO Championship Boxing on July 14. November 16, 2007 Goossen broke new ground with the "Showtime in Paradise" promotion held on the "Simply Beautiful" island of St. Lucia, where he featured Andre Ward in his first 10-round victory against undefeated super middleweight Roger Cantrell. 2007 also saw the emergence of Cristobal Arreola that many boxing experts pick as the first Mexican to have a legitimate chance of becoming heavyweight world champion.

This frenzied pace and magnitude of events is a tribute not only to Goossen’s savvy, energy and vision as a promoter, but his ability to assemble a solid staff of professionals which possess the confidence and trust to help make the fighters and the events very successful.

However, Goossen realizes that the stars are the fighters and that he is not one to rest on his laurels.

“I've always been proud of what we've accomplished, but in truth I'd much rather see the growth and success of our fighters. That is my reward,'' Goossen insists.

Goossen stands alone as the only person in the United States to ever hold a boxing managers and promoter's license simultaneously in the 1980's, which was previously prohibited by all U.S. commissions, including the California State Athletic Commission. He appeared before the California Commission and requested the dual licenses rather than fulfilling each position, as he and many others had been doing without being licensed for both. “I perform both duties and I request your acceptance of doing both,” he told the commissioners that morning, “I’m a manager of these fighters, but I also promote them. The fighters are aware of this and endorse it and if you grant it, will allow us to continue in this role with the integrity to our company, the fighters, the fans and this commission.”

“One of my proudest moments outside the ring. The other , was being named a member of the National Association of Attorney's General Task Force on the Betterment of Boxing and testifying at the Boxing Reform Senate Hearings sponsored by and presided over by Senator John McCain.”

In discussing the success of Goossen Tutor, Goossen has followed the same guidelines. ``Our parents believed that honesty and hard work will be rewarded. From my end, I couldn’t have been brought up with better advice or love. My parents lived that way, and instilled those same qualities to their kids,'' he continued.

“Our track record has been very consistent. Work hard to provide fighters with attaining their dreams. Help them to become stars and well-paid. And most importantly, treat fighters honorably. All they have to do is win and we'll take care of the rest.”

You also need to understand the power of the fans, and the importance of promoting entertaining and competitive fights. If you’re successful accomplishing this, with action in the ring, the fighters, fans and the industry will be the beneficiary,'' Goossen added.

Too many times throughout the years we've seen inproprieties in our industry, including recently where some of our stars put themselves into uncomprimising positions. Its not about weathering the storm, or sweeping it under the carpet. Its about being honest to yourself. We need to be able to look the fan and fighter in the eye, man to man, and not have any hidden truths.

This modus operandi has garnered Goossen and his family much success and respect in an industry not known for its integrity, or family tradition.

A member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Goossen is married to Debbie and has four sons. His eldest son, Craig (38). Chris, (35) was former personal chef for Mark Walberg (2001-2006) and current restaurateur in Los Angeles. Max (13) and Rex (9) can often been seen ringside as the event glove-boys.
